Knowing when you are ready
By the time you have a test date, the skills should already be there. Your instructor tells you honestly how close you are: what is missing if you are not ready yet, and that you are ready when you are, without selling extra hours.
Your twelve EDT lessons have to be complete and signed off in your logbook before you sit the test.
What a pretest lesson is
One hour with your instructor in the area around your test centre, shortly before your test. Car hire for the test is part of the price, so you sit the test in the car you practised in. It costs €183.63 in a manual or €193.81 in an automatic.
Manual or automatic on the day
Sit the test in the kind of car you learned in. A pass in a manual covers both kinds of car afterwards, while a pass in an automatic gives a licence for automatics only, code 78.
Before the day
Check what the RSA asks you to bring when it confirms your test, and bring all of it. Our terms set out who is responsible for the insurance documents on the day: see section 8.5 of the terms and conditions, and ask us if anything is unclear.
The RSA's test centres in Munster
You pick your test centre when you book the test with the RSA. These are the centres the RSA's own directory listed for car tests in Munster on 24 October 2026:

- County Limerick: Limerick (Castlemungret), Limerick (Woodview), Newcastle West
- County Tipperary: Clonmel, Nenagh, Thurles, Tipperary town
- County Waterford: Dungarvan, Waterford city
A centre further from home may have an earlier date, so it can be worth looking at more than one. Tell us your centre and your test date when you enquire, and the pretest is planned around them.

One price list across Munster. Pick-up and drop-off at an agreed point is in the price, so the hour you pay for is an hour of driving.
