EDT, the 12 lessons
Essential Driver Training is the 12 lessons a learner permit holder completes with an Approved Driving Instructor before the test. Each one is signed off in your logbook as you go, and we tell you plainly where you are.

Pretest lessons
A one-hour lesson in the area around your test centre shortly before the test, with car hire for the test itself, so you sit it in the car you practised in.

Automatic lessons
EDT and pretest alike can be taught in an automatic. Worth knowing before you book the test: a pass in an automatic gives you an automatic-only licence, code 78.

Twelve lessons, logged
A learner permit holder completes twelve EDT lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor before sitting the driving test. Your instructor signs each one off in your logbook when it is done. Holders of some foreign licences qualify for a reduced six-lesson course.
Between lessons, practise with a qualified driver beside you. The EDT gives the structure; the hours you put in around it make it stick.

Pretest lessons
Once your test is booked, a pretest lesson is your last hour with the instructor before the day, and the car for the test comes with it.
The hour before
A one-hour lesson in the area around your test centre, shortly before your test, so the day does not start cold.
The car
Car hire for the test is part of the pretest price, so you sit the test in the car you practised in.
A straight answer
Your instructor says honestly whether you are ready. If something is missing you hear what it is, and nobody sells you hours you do not need.

Do you teach automatic driving lessons?
Yes, for EDT and pretest alike. Instructor times vary from town to town, so we confirm your instructor and car when you enquire. If you sit the test in an automatic, your licence covers automatics only (code 78).
Can I ask for a female driving instructor?
Yes. Tell us when you enquire, along with anything else that matters to you. We confirm your instructor when we come back to you.
Do you collect me, or do I meet you somewhere?
We collect you. Pick-up and drop-off at an agreed point in your town, at home, school, college or work, is in the lesson price, so the hour you pay for is an hour of driving.
