What the EDT is

Essential Driver Training, the EDT, is twelve one-hour lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor. A learner permit holder completes them before the driving test. Your instructor signs each one off in your logbook as you finish it, so the logbook shows exactly how far you have got.

Holders of some foreign licences qualify for a reduced course of six lessons. If that might be you, tell us which licence you hold when you enquire, and we say which course to book.

Before your first lesson

You need a learner permit first. Pass the theory test, then apply to the NDLS for the permit. With it in hand, fill in the form on this page or call 021 2355558, and we match you with an instructor.

How the twelve lessons run with us

  • Your instructor collects you from a point you agree in your town, home, school, college or work, and drops you back there. The pick-up is in the price.
  • Each lesson is a full hour with an Approved Driving Instructor in a dual-controlled car.
  • The early lessons keep to quiet streets. Busier roads come in once moving off, stopping and the gears feel easy.
  • Nobody shouts. If you are nervous, say so, and the lesson goes at your pace.
  • At the end of each lesson your logbook is signed, and you hear plainly how you are getting on.

Practising between lessons

Twelve lessons are the minimum, not the whole of learning to drive. Between them, practise with a qualified driver beside you, and ask your instructor what to work on before the next one. The hours in between are what make each paid lesson go further.

Manual or automatic

You can take the EDT in either. A pass in a manual lets you drive both; a pass in an automatic gives you an automatic-only licence, code 78. Decide which you need before you book the test, since the licence follows the car you sit it in.

What it costs

The 12-lesson EDT course is €587.95 in a manual or €659.24 in an automatic, with pick-up included. Pay for the course at once or lesson by lesson, online or by phone. The tickets below show each price, and the list is the same across Munster.

After the EDT

The twelve lessons have to be signed off before you sit the driving test, which you book with the RSA. When you have a date, a pretest lesson gives you an hour in the area around your test centre and the car for the test itself. Our driving test preparation guide covers the rest.
