What Athea lessons involve

Booking driving lessons in Athea gets you one-hour lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor, collected from an agreed point and dropped back there. You prepare for Newcastle West or Tralee, whichever gives you the better date.

Collected where you live

Your instructor comes to your home, school or job in Athea, so you never need a lift to Newcastle West just to start. The pick-up is part of the price.

Dual controls, RSA-approved ADI

Lessons are taught by an Approved Driving Instructor in a car with dual controls. It means you can practise crossing Athea Bridge early on with backup beside you.

No raised voices

Lessons stay calm from start to finish, and nervous learners set the pace. If a stretch of road makes you tense, you go back over it until it does not.

Told honestly when you are ready

Before you book a test in Newcastle West or Tralee, you get a straight answer about your readiness. If something is missing, we name it.

Your choice of car

Manual and automatic lessons are both taught. An automatic pass means code 78 and automatic cars only, while a manual pass lets you drive both.

Manual driving lessons Athea

Manual lessons in Athea begin close to home with the controls: moving off, the clutch, the gears and stopping where you mean to. After a few hours, junctions and turns come in, followed by reversing and the other manoeuvres. Lessons then cover more ground, taking in Oolagh Bridge and Athea Bridge and building up speed control on longer drives. Toward the end, your instructor plans the hours around the area of the centre you have chosen, so test standard feels normal by the time you sit it.

Automatic driving lessons Athea

Automatic driving lessons in Athea are the simpler start if gears worry you. You learn the same observation and road position, and you sit the same test. The licence is where the two differ. Pass in an automatic and the licence shows code 78, so you may drive automatics only. A manual pass has no such limit. We confirm automatic times for Athea when you enquire.

Test centres from Athea

Your nearest centre is Newcastle West, 22.5 km by road and about 25 minutes from Athea. Tralee in County Kerry is the next option, 41.9 km and about 40 minutes. Castlemungret, about 55 minutes, and Killarney, about 60, are far enough that they suit only if the nearer two have no date.

Whichever you pick, the pretest is a one-hour lesson in the area around that centre, shortly before your test, with the car hired for the test included. The manual version costs €183.63, the automatic €193.81. On the day, you drive a car you already know well from your Athea lessons.

Learning in Athea

Learning on the roads around Athea

The first hour stays near the point you were collected from, getting used to the car. Over the following lessons the drives grow longer, with Athea Bridge and Oolagh Bridge among the early roads you cross. New skills come one at a time, and each lesson starts by going over the last.

In Athea, the pick-up is simply your home, your school or your workplace, agreed when you book. Your instructor drops you back at the same point, or at another agreed one if that helps your day, at no extra cost.

We also teach in Listowel and Tarbert over the Kerry border, 13.4 km and 13.6 km from Athea in a straight line, and in Newcastle West, 16.1 km away. Learners in each of those are collected in their own town.

The EDT: a guide

Each signature in your EDT logbook stands for one finished lesson. In Athea, you collect all 12 from lessons that start at your own pick-up point. Once they are in, your instructor gives you a plain answer about the test: book it now, or work on a named skill first.

Athea questions

A few good questions

Do I have to get to Newcastle West for lessons?

No. Your instructor collects you in Athea and the lesson starts there. Only the later lessons and your pretest move toward the area around your test centre, and you travel there in the lesson car.

Can I sit my test in Tralee instead?

Yes. Tralee is about 40 minutes from Athea by road, against about 25 for Newcastle West, so it is a sensible choice if it has an earlier date. Tell us which centre you applied for, and your pretest is planned there.

Could I give someone in Athea lessons as a present?

Yes. Vouchers come as 1, 3, 6 or 12 lessons, in manual or automatic. The person receiving one is collected in Athea from an agreed point like any other learner.

How do I start with a driving instructor in Athea?

The theory test comes first, and the NDLS then issues your learner permit. When it arrives, send the form on this page or call 021 2355558, and we match you with an Approved Driving Instructor who collects you in Athea.
