Driving lessons Newcastle West
Lessons in Newcastle West
Our driving lessons in Newcastle West run for an hour each, with an Approved Driving Instructor and pick-up included. Because the test centre is in town, your preparation never involves a long drive.
Collected from St Desmond's College
Students at St Desmond's College can be collected there after class, and others from home or work. Pick-up and drop-off are inside the lesson price.
An ADI and dual controls
An Approved Driving Instructor sits beside you for every lesson, in a dual-controlled car. That stays true from your first careful lap to your drives along Cork Road.
Steady and calm
Nervous learners set the pace here. Your instructor stays calm, explains each step, and adds Sheehan's Road only when you feel ready.
Told when, not sold more
With the centre this close, it is easy to book too soon, so we tell you honestly when you are ready. Otherwise, you get a clear list of what still needs work.
Manual pass, or code 78
You can learn in either type of car. An automatic pass gives a licence marked code 78, for automatics only, while a manual pass covers both.

Manual driving lessons Newcastle West
Manual lessons in Newcastle West start near your pick-up point with the clutch, the gears and moving off smoothly. When those come easily, junctions, roundabouts and reversing follow. Maiden Street, Sheehan's Road and The Arra Roundabout come into the drives as you improve, then Cork Road for longer, steadier stretches. Since the test centre is about 5 minutes away, later lessons can spend real time in its area without losing half the hour to travel.

Learn in an automatic
Automatic driving lessons Newcastle West
Automatic driving lessons in Newcastle West take the clutch away, so you can give the road your full attention from the start. The test at the Newcastle West centre is the same either way. Your licence is not: an automatic pass carries code 78, which limits you to automatic cars, and a manual pass covers both. We confirm automatic availability in Newcastle West when you enquire.

EDT lessons in Newcastle West
Before the test, learner permit holders complete 12 lessons of Essential Driver Training with an Approved Driving Instructor. Each one starts at your agreed pick-up in Newcastle West, and your instructor signs it into your logbook as the hour ends.
EDT is learning to drive, done in the car and recorded as you go, so there is nothing separate to study. If you hold a licence from some other countries, you may need only six. In a manual car the full course is €587.95.

Getting ready for the test
A test centre five minutes away
The Newcastle West test centre is 0.5 km by road from town, about 5 minutes, so the drive on test day is a short one. If you want an earlier date elsewhere, Castlemungret in Limerick is about 40 minutes away, Shannon about 50 and the Mallow centre about 55. Most of your preparation still happens close to home.
Your pretest is one hour in the area around the centre shortly before the test, with car hire for the test included. With the centre this close, almost all of that hour is spent driving where it counts. With an automatic, that hour and the car cost €193.81. Book it on 021 2355558 once your date is confirmed.

Newcastle West roads you will drive
The first hour is spent close to your pick-up point while the car becomes familiar. Maiden Street and Sheehan's Road come next, then The Arra Roundabout once junctions feel natural. Later lessons go out along Cork Road for practice at higher speeds.
If you are at St Desmond's College, your instructor can collect you there. If home or work suits better, that is fine, as long as we agree it in advance. You can be dropped back at the same point or at another agreed one.
Our lessons also run from Rathkeale and Ballingarry, which are 11.4 km and 13.1 km away as the crow flies. Learners there are collected in their own town and can sit their test at the Newcastle West centre too. Athea, 16.1 km away, is on our list as well.

EDT and the test
The EDT: a guide
Your EDT logbook gets one signature at the end of each lesson, twelve in all. In Newcastle West, with the centre so close, it is tempting to book the test the day the twelfth goes in. We tell you honestly whether you are ready first, so the test is booked when it should be.

Newcastle West questions
A few good questions
Is the test centre right in Newcastle West?
The centre is in town, 0.5 km and about 5 minutes by road. That makes the pretest hour and your final lessons easy to spend in its area. Castlemungret in Limerick, about 40 minutes away, is the nearest alternative.
St Desmond's College is my school. Will you collect me there?
Yes, if we agree the college as your pick-up point when you book. Your instructor meets you there and brings you back, or drops you home if you arranged that instead.
Do I still need lessons if the centre is so close?
Yes. Being near the centre helps with the pretest, but every learner permit holder still completes the 12 EDT lessons first. After that, we tell you honestly how many more you need, if any.
Is there a female driving instructor in Newcastle West?
You can ask for a female instructor when you enquire. Instructor availability varies by town, so we cannot promise one in advance, but we take your request into account when we match you.
