Driving lessons Croom

Lessons for Croom learners

Want a driving school in Croom that collects you? We pick you up, teach each one-hour lesson in a dual-controlled car, and tell you honestly when you are ready for Castlemungret.

From the school gate

Students at Coláiste Chiaráin can be collected there, and anyone else from home or work. The pick-up is part of the lesson price, never an extra.

An ADI for every hour

All lessons are with an Approved Driving Instructor, in a car with a brake on each side. Your first drive along High Street happens with that support in place.

Patience is the method

If you are a nervous learner, your instructor keeps every lesson calm and unhurried. Old Cork Road and the bigger roads come only when you are ready.

Booked when you are ready

We only suggest booking Castlemungret or Shannon when your driving is at test standard. Until then, you hear honestly what is still missing.

Two kinds of licence

Manual and automatic lessons are both available. The automatic route ends in a code 78 licence for automatics only, while the manual route covers both.

Your call on preferences

Tell us when you enquire if you would prefer a female instructor, or if anything else would help. We weigh it when we match you.

Manual driving lessons Croom

Your first manual lessons from Croom deal with the car: the clutch, the gears, moving off and stopping without fuss. Junctions and roundabouts come next, then reversing and turning. As those settle, High Street and Ballingarry Road give way to longer drives on Old Cork Road, where you practise speed, spacing and planning ahead. By the final lessons you are driving most of the hour without prompts, which is the standard the test looks for.

Automatic driving lessons Croom

With automatic driving lessons in Croom, the car handles the gears and you concentrate on steering, observation and judgement. You take the same test as a manual learner. Your licence, though, is marked code 78, which limits you to automatic cars, and a manual pass has no such limit. Because instructor times vary from town to town, we confirm an automatic for Croom when you enquire.

EDT lessons in Croom

12EDT lessons6Reduced EDT

Every learner permit holder needs 12 Essential Driver Training lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor before a test. From Croom, they start where we collect you, after school or from home, and each one finishes with a signature in your logbook.

You do not prepare for EDT separately, because the lessons are part of learning to drive, recorded as they happen. Holders of some foreign licences need six rather than 12. The 12 manual lessons together cost €587.95 on our price list.

Getting ready for the test

Your nearest centres from Croom

Castlemungret, one of Limerick's two test centres, is 23.2 km from Croom by road, about 20 minutes. Shannon is further in distance at 40.4 km but only about 30 minutes, which makes it a quicker drive than Newcastle West at about 35. The Mallow centre, about 45 minutes, is a fourth choice.

Before the test you get a pretest: one hour in the area around the centre you chose, close to your date, with the car hired for the test. In an automatic it costs €193.81. You sit the test in the car you trained in, which leaves one less thing to get used to.

Learning in Croom

How lessons progress around Croom

The first hour is spent near your pick-up point, where the controls get your full attention. High Street and Main Street come next, then Ballingarry Road. Later lessons take in Old Cork Road for longer, faster drives, always one new step at a time.

Students at Coláiste Chiaráin can start their lesson at the school, the one point we name in Croom. Otherwise, we collect from home or work. Agree the point when you book, and your instructor brings you back there, or to another agreed spot.

We also teach in Adare, which is 7.3 km away in a straight line, and in Patrickswell, 9.1 km. Ballingarry is on our list too. Learners in each are collected in their own town, at the same price as in Croom.

The EDT: a guide

The logbook records your 12 EDT lessons, one signature per hour. For a student at Coláiste Chiaráin that might mean a dozen lessons fitted round the school year, each one signed as you finish. Bring it every time, and once it is complete, your instructor talks you through booking the test.

Croom questions

A few good questions

Can I go straight from Coláiste Chiaráin to a lesson?

Yes, if we agree the school as your pick-up point. Your instructor meets you there, and at the end of the hour drops you home or back at school, whichever you arranged. Lesson times depend on your instructor and are confirmed when you enquire.

Is Shannon quicker than Newcastle West from Croom?

By road, yes. Shannon is about 30 minutes away and Newcastle West about 35, even though Shannon is further in kilometres. Castlemungret, at about 20 minutes, is the nearest of all.

What does a lesson in Croom cost?

A single manual hour is €53.27, with pick-up and drop-off at your agreed point included. Automatic hours cost a little more, and every price appears on the tickets. Pay online or by phone.

Before I start in Croom, what do I need?

Two things: the theory test, passed, and a learner permit, which the NDLS issues. After that, send the form on this page or call 021 2355558, and tell us whether to collect you at home, at work or at school.
