Driving lessonsNewport
Your instructor collects you at Saint Joseph's College, at home or at work in Newport, and the pick-up is in the price. The nearest test centre is Woodview in Limerick, about 25 minutes away.
Newport lessons across two counties
Driving lessons in Newport start at your agreed pick-up and last an hour, with an Approved Driving Instructor in a dual-controlled car. Your test can be in Limerick or Tipperary, and we prepare you for either.
From college to car
Saint Joseph's College can be where a lesson begins for students, and home or work for everyone else. The collection is always part of the price.
RSA-approved instructors
Every lesson is with an Approved Driving Instructor in a car with dual controls. Your early drives on Cork Road have a second brake within reach.
Unhurried hours
Nervous learners are given time. Custom Gap Road and The Black Road come into the lessons only when you are comfortable, and the car stays calm throughout.
Straight answers before the test
Whether you aim for Woodview or Nenagh, we tell you honestly when you are ready. If you are not, you hear what to work on next.
Pick the car you learn in
We teach both. The licence after an automatic pass is for automatic cars only, marked code 78, while a manual pass lets you drive either kind.
Your wishes, taken into account
If a female instructor would help, or there is anything else we should know, tell us when you enquire. It is part of how we decide who teaches you in Newport.

Manual driving lessons Newport
Manual lessons in Newport start near your pick-up point: clutch, gears and a smooth start and stop. Junctions, roundabouts and the reversing manoeuvres follow. Cork Road and Custom Gap Road come into the early drives, then The Black Road, and the lessons reach further out as your control improves. Toward the end, your instructor plans the hours around the area of the centre you chose, whether that is Woodview, about 25 minutes away, or Nenagh, about 30.
Ask about manual lessons ↗Automatic driving lessons Newport
Automatic driving lessons in Newport mean a car that does its own gear changes, so your attention stays on the road. Manual and automatic learners sit one and the same test. The licence after an automatic pass carries code 78 and limits you to automatic cars, while a manual pass covers both. Mention it on the form, and we find an automatic instructor who covers Newport.

Newport lesson prices
Newport learners pay the same as learners in Castleconnell or Murroe across the county line, and every ticket includes the pick-up.
EDT lessons in Newport
Every one of the 12 Essential Driver Training lessons, compulsory before the test on a learner permit, is taught by an Approved Driving Instructor. From Newport, each starts at your agreed pick-up point and ends with your logbook signed by your instructor.
There is no EDT homework: you drive, and your instructor plans what each hour covers. Some foreign licences mean a shorter course of six lessons. The automatic course costs €659.24 in full, with pick-up from Newport included each time you drive.
The EDT guide ↗Testing across the county line
Your nearest centre is over the county line: Woodview, 19.4 km by road and about 25 minutes. Within County Tipperary, Nenagh is 32.1 km and about 30 minutes. Shannon takes about 35 and Thurles about 55, so the first two are where to start. Either way, the last lessons move to its area.
Shortly before your test, the pretest gives you an hour in the area around your centre, and the car for the test itself. With car hire, a manual pretest is €183.63. You sit the test in the car you learned in, after a last hour near the centre. Book it once your date is confirmed, by phone or with the form.
Newport roads, first to last
Your first hour stays near your pick-up while you get used to the car. Early drives use Cork Road and Custom Gap Road, then The Black Road, and later lessons go further out of Newport for practice at higher speeds and on longer drives.
Students can start lessons at Saint Joseph's College, and others at home or work. Agree the point with us when you book, and your instructor returns you there at the end of the hour unless you ask for something different in advance.
Castleconnell, 5.5 km away in a straight line, and Murroe, 6.8 km, are both over the Limerick border, and we teach in each. Montpelier is covered too. If you live in one of them, lessons start there instead of here.

The EDT: a guide
The 12 EDT entries in your logbook are signed one at a time, at the end of each lesson from Newport. Keep the book with your permit and bring both every time. When the last is signed and your instructor agrees you are ready, we look at Woodview and Nenagh dates together.
The EDT guide ↗ Preparing for the test ↗A few good questions
Why would I test in Limerick if I live in Tipperary?
Because Woodview in Limerick is the nearest centre to Newport, about 25 minutes by road. Your county does not decide your centre. Nenagh, about 30 minutes away, is the nearest one in County Tipperary.
Do lessons have to start at home?
No. Your workplace, or Saint Joseph's College for students, can be the agreed pick-up point instead. Whichever you choose, your instructor meets you there and brings you back at the end of the hour.
Is the price different on the Limerick side?
No. Newport, Castleconnell and Murroe all share one price list, as does every other town we teach in. A single manual hour costs €53.27, pick-up included, and you can pay online or by phone.
Can I book a driving instructor in Newport online?
Yes. The form on this page reaches us directly, or you can call 021 2355558. Give us your pick-up point and your choice of car, and we come back to you with an instructor and a first lesson time.
