Driving lessons Portlaw
Portlaw lessons, what to expect
Taking driving lessons in Portlaw with us means one hour of driving each time, an Approved Driving Instructor in a dual-controlled car, and collection at an agreed point.
Meet at the community hall
Portlaw Community Hall makes a simple meeting point, though home, school or work are just as good. Every lesson price already covers being collected and brought back.
Dual-controlled, RSA-approved
Your Approved Driving Instructor sits beside you with a second brake. Malcomson Square and William Street can come in early, because that support is there.
Calm from the start
Lessons never involve raised voices. If you are nervous, your instructor keeps the steps small, the pace gentle and the tone kind.
Honest about Waterford
Before you book the Waterford centre, you get a straight answer on whether you are ready. If you are not, you hear what is missing and what to practise.
Manual or automatic
Either car can be used for EDT, the pretest and the test. A manual pass lets you drive both, but an automatic pass gives code 78, for automatics only.
Your instructor, your say

Choose your transmission
Manual driving lessons Portlaw
On a manual course from Portlaw, you start with clutch, gears and moving off smoothly near your pick-up point. Malcomson Square and William Street then give you practice at junctions and signals. Pollrone Road follows when you are ready for longer drives at steady speeds. Manoeuvres are introduced gradually. In the later lessons you drive toward Waterford city, so the area around the test centre is familiar before your pretest. We say so clearly when you reach test standard.

Learn in an automatic
Automatic driving lessons Portlaw
Automatic driving lessons in Portlaw free you from the clutch and the gear lever, so you can concentrate on what is happening around the car. Preparation for the Waterford centre does not change. The licence is the thing to think about. Passing in an automatic gives a code 78 licence, for automatic cars only, and passing in a manual covers both. An automatic car and instructor for Portlaw can be confirmed as soon as you get in touch.

EDT lessons in Portlaw
Essential Driver Training must be completed by every learner permit holder before the test. The course is a dozen lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor, signed off one by one in your logbook. In Portlaw, each lesson starts at your agreed point, home, work or Portlaw Community Hall.
Holders of some foreign licences qualify for a shorter course of six lessons, so tell us which licence you have. If you learn in an automatic, the twelve lessons come to €659.24. Your instructor teaches each lesson properly, so the signatures mean real progress.

Getting ready for the test
Testing from Portlaw
From Portlaw, the closest centre is Waterford, at 19.9 km and about 20 minutes by road. Dungarvan is about 35 minutes away and Clonmel about 40, so both are realistic if they offer an earlier date. Tipperary town is about 70 minutes. The later lessons then move to the centre you book.
Shortly before your test, the pretest gives you a one-hour lesson in the area around your centre, plus car hire for the test. You sit the test in the car that has been collecting you from Portlaw. A manual pretest, car hire included, costs €183.63. You can book it by phone on 021 2355558 or online.

Learning in Portlaw
First drives around Portlaw
The first lessons stay close to your pick-up point while you learn the controls. Malcomson Square and William Street come next, once moving off and stopping are smooth. Pollrone Road follows for longer stretches. Later lessons head toward Waterford city, Dungarvan or Clonmel, depending on your test centre.
Portlaw Community Hall is the meeting point we name for Portlaw, easy to agree if your home is awkward to find. Home, school or your job are fine as pick-up points too. The hour ends with a drop-off at your agreed point, never charged separately.
Carrick-on-Suir is 9.2 km from Portlaw in a straight line, across the county line in Tipperary, and we teach there too. Kilmacthomas is also nearby. If you work in either town, you can be collected there instead of at home.

EDT and the test
The EDT: a guide
Every EDT lesson ends with a signature in your logbook, and you keep the book with you between lessons. It travels to each one. After 12 signed lessons, the course is complete. Whether you are ready for the Waterford test is a separate question, and your instructor answers it honestly.

Portlaw questions
A few good questions
How long will the drive to the Waterford test centre take?
Around 20 minutes, which is 19.9 km by road. It is the nearest centre. Dungarvan, about 35 minutes away, and Clonmel, about 40, are the alternatives if you want a different date.
Would Portlaw Community Hall work for pick-up?
Yes. Agree the hall as your pick-up point, and your instructor meets you there at the start of the lesson. You can be dropped back at the hall or at home, with nothing added to the price.
I am a nervous learner. Is there a driving school in Portlaw for me?
Yes. Nervous learners are welcome, and nobody shouts in our cars. Say so when you enquire, and your instructor keeps the opening lessons short on distance and long on practice until you feel ready.
I live in Carrick-on-Suir. Can I book with you?
Yes. Carrick-on-Suir is on our list as well, with pick-up and prices just as they are here. Tell us your town when you enquire, and we find an instructor who can collect you.
