Every learner permit holder must complete 12 Essential Driver Training lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor before the test. Your instructor signs off each lesson in your logbook, so the record builds as you go. In Carrigaline, every EDT lesson begins at your agreed pick-up point.
EDT can be done in a manual or an automatic car, and the tickets show the course in both. If you already hold a licence from another country, you may qualify for a reduced course of six lessons, so ask us first.

Getting ready for the test
Taking the test from Carrigaline
The nearest test centre is Wilton, about 15.7 km and 15 minutes by road. The Mallow centre and Mitchelstown are both about 45 minutes away. Wilton is the obvious choice, but a further centre may sometimes offer an earlier date, and you are free to pick it. We prepare you for either.
Book a pretest once your test date is set. It is a one-hour lesson in the area around the centre, plus the car on hire for the test itself. On test day you sit in a car you already know. It is your last lesson before the test, so use it to settle any nerves.

Learning in Carrigaline
Learning on Carrigaline's roads
Lessons begin near your pick-up point and build at your pace. Ballinrea Road and Ballea Road usually come first, with Cork Road and Strand Road added once junctions and gear changes feel natural. Your instructor plans each step with you.
Owenabue Mall is the meeting point we use when home pick-up will not work. We can also collect you from school, college or work, by arrangement. If you ask, we can drop you somewhere different at the end of the hour.
We teach in the towns close to Carrigaline as well. Ringaskiddy is 5.2 km away, Crosshaven 6.8 km and Passage West 7.4 km, measured in a straight line. Lesson prices and the pretest work the same way in each of them.

We can, by arrangement. Owenabue Mall is our one meeting point in Carrigaline, for learners who would rather not be picked up at home. Drop-off can be there or elsewhere.
Manual or automatic: which should a Carrigaline learner choose?
If you might ever drive a manual, learn in one, because a manual pass covers both. An automatic pass is restricted by code 78. Some learners still prefer automatic for the fewer controls, and that is a fair choice.
How far is Wilton from Carrigaline by road?
About 15 minutes from Carrigaline, a distance of about 15.7 km by road. The Mallow centre and Mitchelstown are further, at about 51.8 km and 59.2 km, so Wilton is the usual choice.
