Over the next few lessons you add clutch control and gear changes on Monastery Road, then junctions on Cork Street and High Road. Reversing comes in once the car feels like yours. Learner permit holders must take 12 Essential Driver Training lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor before sitting the test. Your instructor signs off each one in your logbook. For a Passage West learner, EDT lessons start from home or Saint Peter's Community School.
The 12 lessons give your learning a clear shape, and the logbook shows what is done at any point. If you hold a licence from certain other countries, a reduced six-lesson course may apply, and we can tell you before you book.
Wilton is your nearest test centre, about 13.6 km and 15 minutes by road from Passage West. If you want a wider choice of dates, the Mallow centre and Mitchelstown are both about 45 minutes away. We prepare you for whichever centre you book, and the final choice is always yours.
Shortly before your test you can book a pretest, a one-hour lesson in the area around the centre. The car is then hired to you for the test itself, which means you are tested in a car you know well. Ask about it once we agree you are ready for the test.
You start near your pick-up point, getting used to the car before anything else. As you gain confidence, lessons take in High Road and An Crompán. A new skill is added each week until junctions and gear changes come without thinking.
Saint Peter's Community School is our one meeting point in Passage West. If you would rather be collected from home or work, that is fine too, as long as we agree the spot in advance. The same goes for where you are dropped off.
We also teach in neighbouring towns. Cobh is 3.6 km away and Ringaskiddy 4.7 km, as the crow flies, and Carrigaline is not much further. If you study in one place and live in another, tell us when you enquire.
Your EDT logbook keeps a clear record. Every completed lesson is signed, so you can see how far you have come and how many are left. We pair that with honest feedback after each hour: what went well, what needs another go, and when you are ready for the test.
