In a manual, the early hours go on the clutch, gears and steering until moving away and stopping feel natural. Then lessons widen out to Spy Hill and West Beach, with more junctions and more decisions left to you. Towards the end, your instructor says less and you plan more of each drive yourself. That shift is how we judge whether you are close to test standard, and we tell you what we see.
