Learn in a manual and you can drive both kinds of car. Learn in an automatic and your licence carries code 78, which restricts you to automatics.

Choose your transmission
Manual driving lessons Kanturk
Manual lessons start slowly, with the pedals, the gears and pulling away smoothly from the kerb. When that's settled, you'll practise junctions on O'Brien Street and Percival Street. Then lessons take in the Freemount Road and the Buttevant Road, where you work on holding a steady speed in the right gear. At the end of each hour your instructor tells you what improved and what to aim for next. Test-standard driving comes last, once the basics run themselves.

Before you can sit your test on a learner permit, you need Essential Driver Training: 12 lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor. Each one goes into your logbook, with your instructor's signature, as you complete it. From Kanturk, every EDT lesson starts at your agreed pick-up.
Some learners who hold a foreign licence qualify for a reduced six-lesson course. Tell us what licence you have, and we'll confirm which course applies before you book. Either way, your instructor explains what each lesson is for before you start it.

Getting ready for the test
Your test from Kanturk
The Mallow centre is the closest to Kanturk, about 17.9 km by road, or about 15 minutes. Newcastle West is about 40 minutes away by road, while Killarney and Mitchelstown are each about 50. A centre further away may have an earlier date, so the choice of which to apply for is yours.
Shortly before your test, you get the pretest: a one-hour lesson in the area around your test centre, plus car hire for the test itself. You then sit the test in the same car you've been practising in. If you've booked Mallow, that hour is spent around the Mallow centre, about 15 minutes from Kanturk.

Your opening lessons start from your pick-up point. Percival Street usually comes first, and the Buttevant Road follows once you're steady with gears and junctions. Your instructor checks with you before each new road, so nothing is sprung on you.
Pick-up is at an agreed point: your home, your work, or Edel Quinn Hall if meeting there suits you better. At the end of the hour, we drop you back there or at another point we've agreed with you. It's all part of the lesson price.
We also teach learners in Millstreet, 16.9 km away in a straight line, and in Buttevant, as well as Dromcolliher in County Limerick. Each of those towns gets the same agreed pick-up, so tell us your address and we'll sort the details.

The EDT: a guide
The logbook pictured here is where your EDT is recorded, one signature per lesson. Well before test day, we also show you a test marking sheet. You'll know what the tester looks for and where you still lose marks. That makes the day at the Mallow centre far less of an unknown.
