Driving lessons Castleisland
How we teach in Castleisland
Driving lessons in Castleisland come with pick-up at an agreed point and an hour in a dual-controlled car. Your instructor tells you straight when you are ready.
Picked up at the college
Students at Castleisland Community College can be collected there and dropped back afterwards. Home or work suit others just as well, and the agreed pick-up is built into the lesson price.
An RSA-approved ADI
Your teacher is an Approved Driving Instructor, and the car is fitted with dual controls. Your instructor can step in if needed, which makes those early runs along College Road far less daunting.
Nobody shouts
Our lessons stay calm, and nervous learners set the pace. If you are not ready for Main Street yet, we wait until you are, and there is no pressure to hurry.
Readiness, honestly judged
With Tralee only about 20 minutes away, it is easy to book a test too soon. We tell you honestly when you are ready, and what is still missing if you are not.
Manual and automatic
Pick the car you want to learn in. Pass in a manual and both types are open to you; pass in an automatic and your licence is marked code 78.
Asking for a female instructor
Let us know what you are looking for in an instructor when you get in touch. Asking for a female instructor is fine, and we confirm your instructor and car then.

Manual driving lessons Castleisland
Manual lessons start with control of the car: steering, the clutch and smooth stops. When those are steady, we bring in gears and junctions on College Road and Old Chapel Lane, then Main Street. Over the following lessons your drives get longer, taking in Killarney Road and, later, the area around whichever centre you have booked. By the end, you should be driving from start to finish without prompts, and that is when we raise the subject of a test.

Automatic driving lessons Castleisland
If you want automatic driving lessons in Castleisland, say so when you enquire and we confirm the car and instructor. Automatics suit learners who would like to set aside the gears and focus on reading the road. There is one thing to know first. Passing your test in an automatic gives an automatic-only licence, shown as code 78. Passing in a manual leaves both options open.

EDT lessons in Castleisland
12EDT lessons6Reduced EDT
Every learner permit holder must complete 12 Essential Driver Training lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor before the driving test. Your instructor signs off each lesson in the logbook as you complete it. For school-leavers in Castleisland, the course can begin with collection from the college, with drop-off back there afterwards.
A reduced course of six lessons is open to holders of some foreign licences, so check with us if that applies to you. The 12-lesson course costs €587.95 in a manual or €659.24 in an automatic. Once EDT is done, we give you a plain answer about the pretest: book it now, or practise a little longer.

Getting ready for the test
Three centres within reach
Tralee is the nearest centre to Castleisland, about 19.4 km by road or roughly 20 minutes. Killarney is about 26.9 km, roughly 30 minutes, and Newcastle West is about 45.2 km, roughly 40 minutes. Having three within that range gives you more chances of a date that fits. Your instructor gets you ready for the one you pick.
Your pretest is one hour in the area around that centre, shortly before the test, along with car hire for the test itself. It means you sit the test in the car you practised in. For a manual, pretest and car hire come to €183.63. Tell us which centre you have booked as soon as you have the date, so we can plan around it.

Learning in Castleisland
Castleisland roads, step by step
Your opening lessons start at your pick-up point and stay simple: moving off, stopping, steering. Old Chapel Lane and College Road come next, and Main Street follows once you are comfortable. Later lessons take you out along Killarney Road for longer stretches of driving.
We agree your pick-up and drop-off point at the start, and it can change if your week changes. Students can use Castleisland Community College, while others choose home or work. Whatever you settle on is covered by the lesson price.
We teach in Tralee and Killarney too, at distances of 17.0 km and 19.3 km in a straight line, and in Listowel. If you work in one of those towns, your lessons can start there instead, with the same price and the same approach.

EDT and the test
The EDT: a guide
Your EDT logbook keeps a running record of your training. Your instructor signs it after each of the 12 lessons, and you keep it until the course is complete. Glance through it before each lesson so you know where you stand. When every entry is signed, you have met the training requirement for the test.

Castleisland questions
A few good questions
From Castleisland, which centre is quickest to reach?
The answer is Tralee, at roughly 20 minutes by road. After it, you have Killarney at about 30 minutes and Newcastle West at about 40. Any of the three is a reasonable choice, and the date on offer is often what decides it.
Could my pick-up be at Castleisland Community College?
Yes, the college can be your agreed point for pick-up and drop-off. If home or work suits you better, that is fine too. It is part of the lesson price either way.
Which is better for me, a manual or an automatic?
If you might ever need to drive a manual, learn in one, because a manual pass covers both. An automatic is easier for some people, but the licence carries code 78 and covers automatics only.
If I am not ready, will a driving instructor in Castleisland say so?
We will, and we tell you what is missing. It might be one skill or a few lessons of practice. Moving a date is better than sitting a test you are not ready for, and we will not sell you hours you do not need.
