Driving lessons Cahir
Cahir lessons and your test
Driving lessons in Cahir with us start at your agreed pick-up and last an hour. With three test centres about 20 minutes away or less, the question is less where to test than when.
Pick-up at Coláiste Dún Iascaigh
If you are at Coláiste Dún Iascaigh, the lesson can begin at the school. Otherwise we come to your home or work, and either way the pick-up is included.
Approved Driving Instructors only
Approved Driving Instructors take every lesson, and every car has dual controls. That backup is there on your first careful drives around The Square.
Unhurried, calm lessons
Nervous learners are never rushed. Castle Street and the faster roads wait until you are ready, and nobody in the car raises their voice.
Ready for any of the three
Whether you apply to Clonmel, Tipperary or Mitchelstown, we tell you honestly when your driving is ready. If it is not, you hear what is missing.
Choose the car
Lessons run in manual or automatic cars. An automatic pass puts code 78 on your licence for automatic cars only, while a manual pass covers both.
Say what helps
Tell us when you enquire if you would prefer a female instructor, or if something else would make lessons easier. We use it to match you.

Manual driving lessons Cahir
In a manual car, the first Cahir lessons cover moving off, the clutch, the gears and smooth stops, close to your pick-up point. Junctions and roundabouts come next, then the reversing exercises, each practised until it holds. The Square and Castle Street are part of the early drives, with Pearse Street and Mountain Road following as your speed and planning improve. With three centres about 20 minutes or less away, your last lessons go to the area around whichever one you booked.

Automatic driving lessons Cahir
Automatic driving lessons in Cahir let the car handle the gears, which leaves you more attention for the road and the people on it. Your test is the same test. The licence that follows carries code 78 after an automatic pass, limiting you to automatics, while a manual pass covers both kinds of car. Tell us early if you want an automatic, and we check which instructor can teach you in Cahir.

EDT lessons in Cahir
12EDT lessons6Reduced EDT
Every learner permit holder completes 12 Essential Driver Training lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor before taking the test. In Cahir, each EDT lesson starts at your agreed pick-up point, the school included, and finishes with a signature in your logbook.
Because the lessons are planned for you, there is no EDT theory to cram. Holders of some foreign licences do a six-lesson course instead of 12, so mention it if that applies. In an automatic, all 12 lessons together cost €659.24.

Getting ready for the test
Clonmel, Tipperary or Mitchelstown
From Cahir, Clonmel is the nearest centre, 14 km by road and about 15 minutes. Tipperary town, at 22.1 km, and Mitchelstown in County Cork, at 27.2 km, are each about 20 minutes away. Thurles is about 30 minutes. With three centres this close, you can apply to whichever offers the date you want.
Your pretest is one hour in the area around the centre you booked, shortly before the test, with the car for the test included. The manual pretest is €183.63. That means you sit the test in the car you trained in, on roads near the centre you have just driven.

Learning in Cahir
Cahir roads, from The Square out
You start near your pick-up point, with time to get the seat, mirrors and controls right. The Square and Castle Street come in during the early lessons. As your control improves, Pearse Street and Mountain Road add longer drives and a little more speed.
Coláiste Dún Iascaigh is where we can collect students straight from class. For everyone else, it is simply home or work instead. Agree the point when you book, and your instructor drops you back there or at another point you arranged.
Ardfinnan, 7.8 km from Cahir in a straight line, and Clogheen, 11.9 km, both have learners collected in their own town. Ballyclerahan is covered too. If you live in one but work in Cahir, ask which pick-up suits you better.

EDT and the test
The EDT: a guide
Your logbook records EDT one signed lesson at a time. In Cahir, the signature goes in before you get out of the car, so you always know where you stand. When all 12 are signed, the choice of Clonmel, Tipperary or Mitchelstown comes down to dates, and we plan your pretest around it.

Cahir questions
A few good questions
How many test centres are near Cahir?
Three are within about 20 minutes by road: Clonmel at about 15, and Tipperary town and Mitchelstown at about 20 each. Thurles, about 30 minutes away, is a fourth option.
Can a lesson start straight after school at Coláiste Dún Iascaigh?
Yes, if the school is your agreed pick-up point. Lesson times depend on your instructor and are confirmed when you enquire, and at the end of the hour you can be dropped home or back at the school.
What does one hour cost in Cahir?
A manual hour is €53.27 and an automatic hour costs a little more, both including the pick-up and drop-off. The same prices apply in every town we teach in, and you can pay online or by phone.
Should I wait until I feel ready before calling a driving instructor in Cahir?
No. Nobody is expected to feel ready before the first lesson. Your instructor starts with the basics near your pick-up point and goes at your pace, so call 021 2355558 or send the form once you hold a learner permit.
