Driving lessons Holycross
Holycross lessons, close to Thurles
Driving lessons in Holycross are a short hop from a test centre. We collect you, teach each hour with an Approved Driving Instructor in a dual-controlled car, and prepare you for Thurles.
Pick-up at the community centre
Meet your instructor at Holycross Community Centre, or be collected at home or work. The pick-up is part of every lesson's price.
An ADI, every hour
Lessons are taught by an Approved Driving Instructor in a dual-controlled car, so your early crossings of Cabragh Bridge come with a brake on both sides.
Steady from start to finish
Nervous learners take their time. Your instructor stays calm, and Farney Bridge and Rathkennan Bridge wait until moving off and steering feel natural.
Honest about Thurles
We tell you plainly whether your driving is ready for the Thurles test. If something is missing, you hear what it is and how the next lessons will cover it.
Car of your choice
We teach both. An automatic pass carries code 78 and limits you to automatic cars, while a manual pass covers both kinds.
Your wishes, considered
When you enquire, mention if you would like a female instructor or have any other wish. We weigh it before we pick who teaches you in Holycross.

Manual driving lessons Holycross
Your first manual lessons in Holycross deal with the clutch, gear changes and smooth stops near your pick-up point. Junctions, roundabouts and reversing come in once moving off is easy. Cabragh Bridge comes early, then Rathkennan Bridge and Farney Bridge as the drives lengthen. With Thurles about 10 minutes away, the last lessons spend most of their time in the area around its centre, so the test is on familiar roads.

Automatic driving lessons Holycross
Automatic driving lessons in Holycross put the car in charge of the gears. That leaves your hands and attention for steering, mirrors and judgement. The test is the one every learner sits, but an automatic pass marks your licence with code 78, so you may drive automatic cars only. Pass in a manual, and that limit never applies. Say you want an automatic when you enquire, and we arrange the car and instructor.

EDT lessons in Holycross
12EDT lessons6Reduced EDT
The rules say 12 lessons of Essential Driver Training, all with an Approved Driving Instructor, before a learner permit holder sits the test. We collect you in Holycross for each one, and your instructor signs the logbook when it finishes.
You will not study EDT as a subject, because it simply is the start of your lessons, planned so each builds on the last. With some foreign licences, six lessons are enough. A full manual course costs €587.95, including pick-up each time.

Getting ready for the test
Thurles test centre, ten minutes away
Thurles is 6.3 km from Holycross by road, about 10 minutes, which keeps travel to a minimum when you practise in the area around the centre. If you would rather test elsewhere, Tipperary town is about 35 minutes away, Clonmel about 40 and Nenagh about 45. We prepare you for whichever you book.
Shortly before the test, the pretest gives you an hour around the Thurles centre, or the centre you chose, together with car hire for the test itself. With a manual car, the pretest is €183.63. You go into the test in the car you know, fresh from driving nearby. Arrange it through the form.

Learning in Holycross
Holycross roads and bridges
Lessons begin near your pick-up point with the controls, so nothing else competes for your attention. Cabragh Bridge comes into the early drives. Rathkennan Bridge and Farney Bridge follow, along with longer lessons toward Thurles as your speed control and planning improve.
Some learners would rather not be collected at home, and Holycross Community Centre suits them. Work is another option. Agree the point when you book, and your instructor brings you back there, or to another agreed point, at the end.
The town of Thurles itself is only 5.8 km away as the crow flies, and Littleton 8.4 km. Lessons run in each, and in Two-Mile Borris too, all starting from a pick-up point in the learner's own town, at the same price as here.

EDT and the test
The EDT: a guide
Your instructor signs your logbook at the end of every EDT lesson in Holycross, so each hour is on record. Keep the book safe with your permit and bring both each time. When the twelfth signature is in, the Thurles centre is about 10 minutes away, and we plan your pretest there.

Holycross questions
A few good questions
Can I practise near the Thurles centre before my test?
Yes. Thurles is about 10 minutes from Holycross by road, so your last lessons and the pretest can spend most of their time in the area around the centre. That way the roads there are familiar on the day.
Are there other test centres I could use?
Yes. Tipperary town is about 35 minutes from Holycross by road, Clonmel about 40 and Nenagh about 45. They are worth considering if Thurles has no date that suits, and we plan your pretest for whichever you choose.
Do automatic lessons cost more?
A little. An automatic hour is €61.41, slightly more than a manual one, and both include pick-up and drop-off in Holycross. The full price list appears on the tickets on this page.
Can an older learner take lessons with a driving instructor in Holycross?
Yes. Age makes no difference to how lessons run: an hour at a time, at your pace, with an Approved Driving Instructor. If you hold a learner permit, the 12 EDT lessons apply to you as to anyone.
