Driving lessons Ring
Lessons in Ring, explained
Our driving lessons in Ring are an hour long, taught by an Approved Driving Instructor in a dual-controlled car, and built around getting you ready for the Dungarvan test.
School or home pick-up
Meánscoil San Nioclás can be your pick-up point if you are a student there, and home or work are fine too. You pay nothing extra to be collected.
A dual-controlled car
An Approved Driving Instructor teaches every lesson, with a brake on their side as well as yours. Youghal Road becomes part of your lessons once you feel in control.
Gentle on nerves
The car stays calm, and nobody shouts. If you are nervous, the steps stay small, and you move on only when you are ready.
Truthful about Dungarvan
With the Dungarvan centre only about 10 minutes away, booking early is tempting. Your instructor tells you honestly whether you are ready, and what is missing if not.
Either car, your choice
You can learn in a manual or an automatic. Pass in an automatic and your licence carries code 78, meaning automatics only, while a manual pass covers both.
Request what you need
If you would feel more at ease with a female instructor, ask when you enquire. Tell us anything else that matters to you as well.

Manual driving lessons Ring
Your manual lessons from Ring start with the controls: clutch, gears and pulling away smoothly from your pick-up point. Once the basics settle, Youghal Road gives you space to practise steady speeds, mirror checks and planning ahead. Junctions and manoeuvres come next, one at a time. Because Dungarvan is so close, many later lessons include the area around its test centre. By the end you are driving whole lessons on your own judgement, and we tell you plainly when that is test standard.

Automatic driving lessons Ring
Automatic driving lessons in Ring leave the clutch and the gears to the car, so you can focus on reading the road. The rest of the course is the same, from school or home pick-up to the pretest near the Dungarvan centre. The licence is worth a thought. An automatic pass carries code 78 and covers automatic cars only, while a manual pass covers both. We confirm an automatic car and instructor for Ring once you enquire.

EDT lessons in Ring
12EDT lessons6Reduced EDT
Essential Driver Training comes before the test for every learner permit holder. It is 12 lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor, each signed off in your logbook as you finish it. In Ring, we can collect you at Meánscoil San Nioclás, which suits students there.
If you hold one of certain foreign licences, a reduced course of six lessons may be enough, so mention it when you get in touch. For a manual car, EDT costs €587.95 in full. Lessons can be spaced to suit you, and none is rushed.

Getting ready for the test
The Dungarvan test from Ring
The closest centre is Dungarvan, 10.2 km and about 10 minutes from Ring by road. The rest are much further: Waterford about 50 minutes, Clonmel about 55 and Mitchelstown about 70. Dungarvan is the clear choice for most dates, and later lessons spend time in the area around it. That keeps test day short.
Just before your test, the pretest gives you an hour of driving around the Dungarvan centre. Car hire for the test itself is part of the package, so you drive the car you learned in on the day. In an automatic, the pretest costs €193.81, booked online or by phone.

Learning in Ring
From Ring to the test centre
Your first lessons stay close to your pick-up point while you learn the car. Youghal Road follows once you can move off and stop smoothly, giving you room for steady speeds. Later lessons drive toward Dungarvan, so the area around the test centre is familiar by the time of your pretest.
For students, Meánscoil San Nioclás is the one meeting point we name here. Home or work can be the pick-up instead. You are dropped back after the lesson, at the same point or another agreed in advance, and the pick-up is free.
Dungarvan and Ballinroad are close: 5.2 km and 6.3 km in a straight line. We teach in both, with agreed pick-up and the same prices. If your job is in Dungarvan, you can be collected there and brought home afterwards.

EDT and the test
The EDT: a guide
Your EDT logbook is signed by your instructor at the end of every lesson. Keep it with you, and bring it each time. It fills up over 12 lessons, and then the course is done. Readiness for the Dungarvan test is a separate judgement, made honestly by your instructor, with no hours padded on.

Ring questions
A few good questions
Does my lesson have to start at home, or can it be Meánscoil San Nioclás?
Yes. Agree the school as your pick-up point when you book, and your instructor meets you there. You can be dropped home or back at school after the lesson, with no extra charge.
Is the Dungarvan test centre far from Ring?
It takes about 10 minutes to cover the 10.2 km by road. It is by far the nearest centre, so most of your test preparation can happen in its area without long drives.
Will a driving instructor in Ring teach me in an automatic?
Automatic lessons are available across Munster, though instructor times vary by town. Ask for an automatic when you enquire, and we confirm the car and instructor for Ring before your first lesson.
How do I start if I have never driven before?
First pass the theory test, then apply to the NDLS for your learner permit. Once you have it, fill in the form or call 021 2355558, and we match you with an instructor and agree your pick-up point.
